ANOTHER ROUND WITH THE WRITING GROUP
There isn't anything new to report. I went to my writing group last night as I said and shared some more of my work with them.
They really are a good group of people and so far have only had positive things to say about my work. Which I think is a good
thing. I mean, there is always the constructive feedback - "I think this scene might work better if..." or "This really needs a little
more..." which is helpful to pretty much every writer - yes, even Stephen King and Dan Brown need feedback on what he writes
sometimes.
But, I was thinking as I sat there, awaiting the critique of my few pages, that this is something every writer should do. If you get a
good group of people (writiers, I should say) together, that can give you constructive feedback and make you feel like your writing
is worth something, then I think you can be successful. I mean, there was a woman there tonight, who'd written a book several
years ago. She'd gone to a writing group - one she had to pay for (which, if you'd read my blog before, you'd know is not
something I condone. Why pay for something if you can get the same quality for free?) - in which the "leader" of the group told
her that her writing was crap. If you find yourself in a group like that, I say simply get up and walk out then and there. I can attest
that this woman's writing was definitely not crap by the way, because she read us a chapter of this novel, and the writing was
simply astounding and hit on an emotional level that I struggle to achieve at times. I would name her for you, but as I have no
permission to do so, I shall not. (If at our next meeting she says its okay, then I will let you know all about her story and such.)
The last time I wrote about the writing group, I was looking at it from a promotional standpoint, which I still advocate for.
However, the benefits of just being able to read your work in front of your peers and get constructive feedback from it is probably
the most invaluable thing I can think of for a writer.
Anyway, at the meeting I heard about this little coffee shop near my house that does many author events. I plan on checking it
out this week. I'll let you know what it's all about when I check it out (which will probably be my next post). Until then... go in peace!
