Back in school and as I said in posts a few weeks ago, I am beginning the process to create my
book trailer. I am starting with two of my classes, to begin drafting what will eventually be a script
for my book trailer.
However, being a teacher, I can't just exploit my students for my own whims. They do need to get
something out of this too. So, I decided that the script for the book trailer is going to be the
culmination project on a unit I am teaching for Adaption. Adapting a literary work into a movie or TV
show has been popular for years. Now with the popularity of Twilight and the Vampire Diaries, kids
understand more about adaption than ever before.
What the students don't know, however, is the process in which a literary work gets adapted into
another form. So, that is what I am teaching them.
The first lesson, is essentially about setting, and how an art director needs to take some lines on
the page and turn it into a fully fleshed out environment. I am teaching my students how to
properly do this like this:
First, I will give each of the students a picture, which they must then write a description of. I will
tell them they need to put every little detail of the setting into the description to make it as perfect
as possible.
Next, the description will then be given to another student, who will then have to do a sketch of
the the description as best as they can. The sketches, will then be compared to the original
drawing, and we'll discuss how it went and why things aren't exactly like the picture, even if the
drawings are close.
I keep saying "will" but only because I'm used to writing a lesson out as a lesson plan beforehand.
The truth is, I did this yesterday and the lesson was a coplete success. My students did a great job
on it, and they really got the scene descriptions down packed.
I'm going to do script formatting with my students next. I will update you on that progress.
