QUERY FOR MAGAZINE

Wow. Over a week I've been working on this, but I think I've finally gotten it to look how I want it to.

Like I said before, you want to start off your query with some kind of hook (something that will draw attention to your article), then
move into a short description of what your article is going to be about. Then finally talk about the length of the article and finally
why you are the very person who is perfect to write it.

Before you even begin the query though, make sure to do some research. Check out Writer's Market or some other website that
will list markets for your work, because the other important thing is, you want to tailor your query specifically for the magazine you
intend to send it. So, while this query looks good, I will only send it out once before tweeking it a bit to fit another magazine.

Anyway, as promised, here is the query I worked on. Take a look, and use it as an example for your own.

Dear _____,

Have you ever seen a movie trailer that just made you want to immediately go out and see the movie? A book trailer works in
much the same way. This is fast becoming a popular tool among new authors for promoting their work. Do a search on
YouTube for “Book Trailer” and you will get over 100,000 hits. Yet, not much is known about the process of creating them.
With all the social media and video sharing networks on the internet, it doesn’t make sense for an author not to utilize trailers to
promote their work in a clear and concise manner which will draw attention.

The article I am proposing is “Creating a Book Trailer”, a how-to article of between 1,250 and 1,500 words. The article will cover
the different types of book trailers an author can make, including: scene from the book, movie type trailer and traditional. I will
also explain how to make and produce a trailer: mood, length, omitting key information and what programs to use. It will also
cover a list of four popular websites to upload the trailer to and techniques to draw attention to it such as, YouTube, Booktown
and RedRoom.

For my young adult novel, High School Heroes, which releases this fall, I have created several book trailers, using the methods
listed in the article. In addition to that, I teach English and writing at both the high school and post secondary levels. I have had
many short stories published in publications such as Worlds Beyond and A Thousand Faces.

I can have a complete manuscript to you within three weeks of the assignment. Thank you for your time, I look forward to hearing
from you.

Sincerely,
James Mascia
