WRITING PROMPTS

As I've said in earlier posts, we always need to write. No matter what stage in promoting our be we are in, we
need to write. I keep my creative juices flowing with short articles for online publications as well as short stories
and the sequel to my soon to be published young adult novel, High School Heroes.

But there are times, when even I get stuck. Where I don't know what to write, where I think that I would rather
just sit and watch TV than to type another word into Microsoft Word. We all get stuck sometimes. The trick is to
unstick yourself.

I have found a way to get those creative juices flowing, sometimes with good and other times with horrific
results, is to look at writing prompts. There are a number of websites out there, with prompts to get you started
on a story. Some sites, even hold monthly or weekly contests to see who can come up with the best story for a
prompts. I tend to stay away from the contest ones, only because if I'm already feeling pressured to write
something, I don't want, or need, to add any extra weight worrying about winning a contest. That isn't to say
that you shouldn't. I'm just saying, they're not for me (when I'm trying to find something to write).

No matter what, writing prompts will give you an idea. And whether you decide to turn it into a story, or just
leave it as a simple few paragraph rough draft, you have put pen to paper and gotten a result. Sometimes, just
getting that done is enough to get you started on your next great piece. And if you do decide to go for a
contest prompt, then you are even going to get exposure for your work, which is exactly what we all want.

I am usually quite pleased with what I write from a prompt. Sometimes it turns nto a whole story, sometimes it
becomes a chapter in a much longer story, and sometimes, it just stays a simple paragraph based on
whatever the question asked me.

I am going to also say, that I use the writing prompt to start my classes everyday. The prompt will always have
to do with what my class is learning on that day, and it always gets the kids into the mindset of learning,
reading and writing. So, I highly suggest them in an academic setting as well.

Below is a list of twelve websites, I've used for writing prompts. I hope something on one of these sites will
inspire you to write something truly awesome.
